Let's start at the beginning: I was born in 1943. Not much happened until I was about twenty. I grew up in a more or less (mostly less) middle class family. When I was about twelve or thirteen, my Dad got me up in the middle of the night to go outside and see Sputnik, the first manmade satellite, fly over. (I wonder why I remember that?) I was always interested in math so that became my major while I studied at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
When I was a senior at UCSB in 1963/64, I took a class in numerical analysis and part of the course work was to write a computer program. The University had just purchased an IBM 1620 (very advanced for that time, I think it had about 32KB of "core"... RAM to you if you are younger than 40). Anyway, I went to a Fortran class given by some one from IBM for a couple of weeks in the evening. I wrote the program and thus became a "programmer" in three easy lessons. Boy, that was easy! But I don't remember if the program ever ran.
Please turn to the next page to hear about how I learned about generalization and parameterization. (Honk! Honk! Remember Bozo yet?).
